After many years of working with the Kwinella Women’s Clinic and Partnership with Horaya Home for Orphaned Children The issue cataracts arose. Cataract surgery and eye care can help many Gambians keep and improve their eyesight. The BDesh Foundation presented Imam Johari with a partnership opportunity that will fund cataract operations for 500 Gambians. This project is in the works but we will need your help so the individuals who need the care in the most remote villages can have access to transportation to attend the clinic surgery and be able to have follow- up care if needed.
Over the course of 3 years in partnership with BDesh Foundation, Soma Eye Specialty Clinic and Horaya Home for Orphaned Children would like to provide training to the Kwinella staff to set up and operate eye health screening clinics. The decision to provide training to the staff at Kwinella Women's Clinic demonstrates a commitment to building local capacity and sustainability in eye care services. Empowering local healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills to set up and operate eye health screening clinics ensures that the initiative can continue to benefit the community beyond the initial intervention period. The screenings will be in preparation for the surgeons to conduct 500 cataract surgeries. Our short-term goal is 100 cataract surgeries in the first year.
Setting a short-term goal of conducting 100 cataract surgeries in the first year is a concrete and achievable target that will have a meaningful impact on addressing the backlog of cases and improving access to essential eye care services. By working together with local partners and leveraging expertise and resources from organizations like the BDesh Foundation and Soma Eye Specialty Clinic, Sol-Power Africa is well-positioned to make significant progress toward this goal.
Tackling the issue of cataracts, the partnership addresses an immediate health need and invests in the future well-being and potential of young individuals in The Gambia. Addressing vision impairment in children can have long-term benefits for their educational attainment, social integration, and overall quality of life.
